Sadness fom the Class of 1935
This from the class correspondent of the Middlebury class of 1935—the oldest class represented in our alumni magazine: “I am in a retirement home.  There are about 50 residents here.  We have a lot of activities to choose from that keep us busy and entertained.  I spend a good deal of time on a sunny porch and enjoy the company of a number of friendly squirrels that come for the...

Oh United
I really love United Airlines (because obviously the Star Alliance is the best one) but I get a lot of emails from airlines so I just went to unsubscribe from my United Airlines emails because they are annoying and I never read them. Here is the fine print on my email: You are subscribed to receive information and updates from United at kathryn.clagett@gmail.com. Please do not reply to this...

Oh dear
I’m currently planning a trip to Texas for the first week of May and I’m researching places to camp and/or hike in close proximity to Austin.  Currently high on my list is Enchanted Rock State Park.  This gem comes from a Trip Advisor review of the park: 2 Stars: “Not a quick place to stop off to see the “Enchanted rocks” You have to pay to go hiking or camping and...

Yellow Fever
Last week I had the pleasure of going to see an awesome band from Austin, TX: Yellow Fever.  The male half of this duo is married to my grad school friend and she is awesome and got us comp tickets.  I really like their minimalist sound (although the number of instruments they are each playing during the show would beg to differ with that descriptor) and Jennifer has an awesome jazzy voice that...

Arcade Fire at MSG round-up →
I was there!  And I was at the Boston show Sunday.  Both were great.  Boston was a little more intimate—more interacting with the crowd, more anecdotes.  Also a lot more of their newer album and a much longer set.  NYC had Spoon though (who rock) and the sound was better because it was contained by a building and not outside.  Also they focused just on the hits which can be a positive or...

Is it weird to drink water or other cold beverages out of mugs?  I think it’s totall normal and sometimes prefer something with a handle but I have been made fun of by several people in the past week for doing so.  It’s a vessel!  That holds liquids!  What difference does it make? Blarg.  That’s all.

Strange signs from abroad →
One of my favorite things are funny and/or ironic signs (personal favorite: a no-smoking sign in front of a giant steaming (and therefore appears to be smoking) geyser in Rotorua in New Zealand); here’s a whole slide show of them from the NYT.

Can you tell that work is quiet today?  Thank god this volcanic ash cloud is only causing problems for high school groups and not college groups. Just discovered this while voting for the Weebys.  Neat. Click here for an example

Taste
It’s been a weird week for me and food; I’ve had this odd metallic/bitter/sour taste in my mouth all week and haven’t been able to kick it no matter how many sweet things I eat (a lot).  Then last night when I was mentioning this to Ryan, he said he had just read about this thing called ‘Pine Mouth’ that is caused when you eat pine nuts from China.  Light bulb: I had...

Census data on census data returns →
How meta.  Fewer people in cities return their census forms than in the country.  The Midwest/Great Plains regions have returned far more censuses (censi?) than other regions so far.  But this is just the preliminary results not counting all the people who mailed them in on the last possible day, which was yesterday.

2010 Census
As I have mentioned on this blog before (see here), I am pretty excited about the 2010 Census.  I’m writing this post as a plea to fill out whatever forms are mailed to you.  Most of Americans get the short form that I just filled out; it takes about 10 seconds to do. This needs to be mailed in for April 1st so if you have it lying around somewhere, make sure to not let it sit much longer. ...

Why the Internet will Fail: an article from 1995 →
Thanks to VW for this one.  I particularly enjoy this gem: Then there’s cyberbusiness. We’re promised instant catalog shopping–just point and click for great deals. We’ll order airline tickets over the network, make restaurant reservations and negotiate sales contracts. Stores will become obselete. So how come my local mall does more business in an afternoon than the entire Internet handles in a...

The xx
OK, so this band was everywhere on end of the year best lists, but in case you haven’t heard of them, check them out.  They remind me of Broken Social Scene crossed with Stars in that the songs are just really pretty, almost anthems, but there are also really great male/female vocals.  One of the members was also in Four Tet and Hot Chip and you can hear a little of that in here too.  The...
