Taste
It’s been a weird week for me and food; I’ve had this odd metallic/bitter/sour taste in my mouth all week and haven’t been able to kick it no matter how many sweet things I eat (a lot). Then last night when I was mentioning this to Ryan, he said he had just read about this thing called ‘Pine Mouth’ that is caused when you eat pine nuts from China. Light bulb: I had had a salad last weekend from the pizza place across the street which, although super delicious, probably doesn’t opt for locally grown(/harvested?) pine-nuts.
Anyways, this comes not from actual chemicals in the pine nuts but rather from some sort of oxidation process that goes on, although it seems to be mainly a mystery from my cursory research. Read about it here: Got Pine Mouth? from Epicurious.com.
On a semi-related note I was happy to see an article in the NYTimes about people who hate cilantro. For some reason this flavor has always turned me off and I’ve always been a bit embarrassed about it because so many people adore it. Anyways, according to the NYTimes, I’m not alone.
